Bemidji Area Chapter

Untitled document

Welcome to Bemidji!  Known as the First City on the Mississippi River, Bemidji is only miles from the headwaters of the Mississippi.  Bemidji comes from the ojibwe word "Bay-may-ji-maug", meaning "lake with cross waters", referring to the Mississippi River, which crosses through Lake Bemidji as it begins its 2,552  mile journey to New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico.  Bemidji is also home to legends, Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.

Bemidji is a year round destination with over 400 lakes located within a 25 mile radius.  The abundance of area lakes makes Bemidji an ideal location for a local chapter of Let's Go Fishing with Seniors.  The Bemidji Chapter of LGFWS was formally organized in January 2006 with an energetic 8 member board of directors who share a passion for fishing and a desire to share this experience wtih others.  In May 2006, the Bemidji Chapter was the recipient of a generous grant, enabeling us to purchase our own 24' pontoon and start focusing on our goal of getting our local seniors out on the beautiful area lakes for fishing and boating excursions. We want to provide seniors an opportunity to spend time on our area lakes; which so many have done in the past.  Many seniors are unable to get out on the lakes themselves due to lack of income, no equipment, health issues or loss of fishing partners.

Let's Go Fishing Bemidji Chapter will operate during the summer months starting June 1st, with trips approximately 3 hours in length.  There is no cost to seniors other than a valid MN fishing license if required.  Donations will be accepted, but are not required.  Trips will be scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis, and the number of days, seats and trips will depend on the availability of boats or pontoons, and guides.  We will operate only on lakes that have public restroom facilities and docks for easy access.  Several area resorts have also made their facilities available for use.  Please let us know at the time of scheduling if you require special arrangements, we will try to accomodate those with physical handicaps or limitations as best we can.  Our pontoon is specially designed with higher guard rails, wider door access, and 12 removable captains chairs.  Travel to and from the lake will be the responsibility of the participants.  LGF provides everything needed for an outing, including pontoon, an experienced guide, equipment, life preservers, bait, non-alcholic beverage & snack, radio communications...and lots of fun!

If you are interested in scheduling a boating or fishing excursion, please call Janee at 218-766-0881.
