Willmar Area Chapter
The Willmar Area Chapter was the first Let's Go Fishing effort. We have been operating since June of 2002. Each year, the number of our volunteers and excursions has grown. We have created a successful model for other future chapters to follow.
Willmar, Minnesota is located about 100 miles due west of Minneapolis/St. Paul. It is the county seat of Kandiyohi County. With a population of about 20,000, Willmar is the retail shopping, and medical center of West Central Minnesota. It is the home of Jennie-O Turkey Store, one of the largest turkey processing companies in the world.
Kandiyohi County's slogan is "Where the lakes begin". With 88 lakes, according to the United States Geological Survey, it has one of the largest concentrations of lakes of any county in southern Minnesota. There are dozens of good fishing and boating lakes.
Willmar Area Chapter of Let's Go Fishing takes most of their Senior excursions on beautiful Green Lake at Spicer. Green Lake is the largest body of water in the area. The clean, deep waters of Green lake are home to many species of fish. The abundant walleye are the most sought after game fish, but the lake's large population of smallmouth bass often save the day. These feisty critters provide many of our seniors a tussle they haven't experienced before. Nearly every trip results in a good-sized fish for one or more of our guests. Pontoon excursions are also very popular on Green Lake because of the many elegant homes to see on the lakeshore.
We also take fishing trips to Long Lake near Hawick, or Diamond Lake by Atwater for exceptional panfishing. Both lakes are more sheltered than Green Lake for days when it may be too windy for a bigger lake. Crappie, sunfish, northern pike, and an occasional bass provide the action.
